St Mary’s Graveyard
A dedicated group of volunteers work hard to maintain the ancient graveyards of our beautiful church. You are welcome to come and see. It’s open from light till night.
A guided tour of the churchyard itself, produced by David Allan, is available on laminated sheets near the Lych Gate for people who want to wander and marvel.
The churchyard contains the war graves of fourteen service personnel from World War 1 and a Merchant Navy officer from World War Two.
The Lych-Gate
The lych-gate was donated by Edward Hodgson Harrison who lived in Plymyard House at the Bromborough end of Bridle Road.
Yew Tree
There is an ancient Yew Tree in the church yard believed to be over 1800 year old! It is easily the oldest tree in Wirral and indeed one of the oldest in the country. To put it in context it would have been 200 years old when the Roman Legions were leaving Chester. Some years ago, a sword was found hidden in its topmost branches which is now on display in the church.
